More plants, small stone paths, and mulch to make everything tidy and cozy going into winter. • We went with some natives, some native cultivars, and some tough, drought tolerant ornamentals. Everything from Huckleberries to Bleeding Hearts to Fothergilla. • The city supplied a beautiful Heritage River Birch for the corner foundation piece and irrigation might come next spring. • Thanks to my client for trusting us with this new garden she adopted after moving here from Texas. Just a straight forward day project for a budding gardener and her soon-to-arrive shed. • With a design on the fly approach and a little pre-planning, this tiny back yard and long side paths turned out nice! • Still, you’d be surprised at how many materials are needed for a one day project. Sometimes just as many as a 2 week project. Steel edging, gravel, more gravel, stepping stones, soil blend, compost, plants, mulch, and cedar chips. When you have a design that needs a rain garden, but your budget restricts you to just one part of the design, you definitely get the rain garden built first. • Placed far enough away from the foundation, with the right slope, and a few water-loving plants, rain gardens can add a fun element to any garden. This old Portland home was desperately wanting to be shared with the neighborhood and now it can shine! • After the client did the demo, we got in there and placed 2.5 tons of boulders and oodles of drought tolerant, heat loving plants.
